I am glad Prop 8 passed, but here are some of my simple thoughts on the subject.
First off, I didn't realize the legal differences, financial differences of civil unions. I like the idea of idea of civil unions, but I don't think same sex couples should be penalized in this regard. As a matter of civil rights they should get all the legal and financial benefits as married couples.
However, I do think that heterosexual couples should have their recognition as well. Marriage as being defined as between a man and a woman for the last 5,000 years (quoted from Rick Warren) should not be changed to accommodate today's changing world. I must add, as a woman married to a man, if marriage was all inclusive, than I would want special recognition given to me, as a woman who loves and lives day in and day out with a member of the opposite sex, because our differences are beyond personality. He is a man... and I as a woman need to have my lifestyle choice validated. It is extremely difficult at times being in life with him and I just can't let that go unnoticed. It is not the same as same sex with different personalities.
Next, it frustrates me to hear same sex couples say changing the definition of marriage to include same sex couples has nothing to do with kids and public school education. It is does, because one law will affect others laws such as adoption and that would include public welfare with children and public schools relationship with welfare for the children.
Those are the main points on my mind today.
